Leap Year Love

In honor of 2012 being a Leap Year & tomorrow’s date being the rare 2/29, here at SEBC we decided to research Leap Year Weddings, Anniversaries and Traditions. Holy Leap Year, Batman! We learned a lot. Continue on to learn about Love & Leap Years…

“Long ago women hoping to marry had to wait for their beaus to propose. They were not ‘allowed’ to make the first move, except on one day, Feb. 29.”

“The tradition dates back hundreds of years, to when the leap year was not recognized by English law; the day was “leapt over” and ignored. Since it had no legal status, formal traditions did not apply. Women who  were not content to wait for a proposal took advantage of this anomaly and popped the question.”

“The legend has it that in the year 1288, in Scotland, it was made legal for women to propose to men in a Leap Year only. If he declines, he must provide her with a silk dress, or a pair of gloves. There was a fine for the guy if he said no!”

“The legend spread around the world and soon there were many Leap Year Balls and Leap Year Dances. Some were being held so the women may ask the man to dance. And some were specifically for the woman to ask him for his hand in marriage.”

Below are a few 1800s and early 1900s postcards depicting Women taking advantage of the Leap Day & going after the man of her dreams. We love these!

Happy Leap Year from SEBC- go after the Man you love!!

Personalizing Your Wedding Day

Every bride wants that special pop to their wedding day, the one thing that guests will go home talking about. Making a wedding personal isn’t about putting a monogram on napkins and favors anymore, it’s taking that extra step to make guests say, “Wow!” Here are a few tips for making your wedding day stand out in your own way.

Color in your Dress
Adding the extra pop of color coordinating with bridesmaids (or not) is sure to add some pizazz to your dress. Consider even wearing a dress in a color of that is not so traditional. For example, blush pink or light blue is sure to get people talking. Make sure you stick to the color and the theme of your day and that will get people talking.

Everyone thinks of wedding flowers as roses, roses, and more roses. Try mixing it up and picking out wild flowers from the farmer’s market or picking some non-traditional flowers for your bouquet. There are many unique flower options to choose from; delphiniums and spider mums have that extra something to make your bouquet or centerpieces stand out. In picking your flowers, make sure you know that flower prices can change depending on the season. Do a search for in season flowers and you are sure to find some unique flowers to make your day unique.

Traditional layered wedding cake is vanilla or chocolate with a white buttercream frosting. There are many options to change up your cake. Cupcakes, cake pops, unique designs are some ideas. You can even pick different flavors for different layers. Make sure you get your groom’s input on the cake flavors, because he will love it. Or even surprise him with a fun groom’s cake in his favorite flavor and design.

Gone are the days when weddings are restricted to a church or a hotel . Change up the routine with a venue that will be sure to have your guests talking for years. Popular venues now are barns, vineyards, gardens, or even private residences. Pick a place that is meaningful for you and your groom and will have guests interacting with their surroundings.
